Dev Blog Update: Weekly Format and Progress


Greetings, fellow game enthusiasts!

This week, I’ve revamped the map loading and wave generation systems. Now, both kick in immediately upon starting the game, creating a smoother experience. I’ve also decided to shift this blog to a weekly format—it’s much easier to update consistently and keeps things organized.

Here’s the to-do list I’m working through before finalizing the game for wider release:

Audio Enhancements

  • Level-up sound effects.
  • Menu interaction sounds.
  • Sounds for losing and winning.
  • Feedback sounds:
    • Coin collection.
    • Mana collection.
    • Menu button clicks.
    • "Play" button press with vibration and camera shake.

Visual Feedback and Feel

  • Add camera shake and blink effects on level-up.
  • Improve chest opening UI.
  • Visual and sound effects for recruiting cats, explaining their roles.
  • Enhance effects for unlocking characters and spells.
  • Update spell descriptions with more detail.
  • Add a few new spells and the fourth main character.

Gameplay Balancing

  • Tweak:
    • Cats’ resource generation rates.
    • Spell costs.
    • Stat upgrade prices and impacts.
    • Stat caps.
  • Scale enemies’ HP and damage with gameplay time.

New Content

  • More Levels:
    • After level 10, introduce new levels with 10 minutes of gameplay.
  • Resurrection mechanic using crystals.
  • Resistance-based enemies for specific levels.
  • Improved bosses:
    • Bosses drop chests.
    • Huge boss designs with HP bars.
    • Special boss effects.
  • Buffs for cats:
    • Catnip.
    • Magic litterbox.
  • Legendary cat.
  • Cats that heal or deal damage to enemies.
  • Web-GL demo:
    • One level with preselected spells and a fixed cat.

Systems and Polish

  • Add pooling for enemies and particles.
  • Fix static electro particles.
  • Combined spells:
    • Fuse spells into new ones (either before the game or during specific combinations).
  • Victory panel displaying the collected cats as a pile.
  • Greater influence of cats:
    • Per-level stats for generated resources.

Deployment

  • Release a Web-GL demo.
  • Implement a data collection popup.
  • Launch the game on Google Play.

Big Ideas on the Horizon:

  • Combined Spells: Experimenting with combining spells into more powerful versions. This could add a new layer of strategy, perhaps as a pre-game crafting mechanic or automatic fusion during gameplay.
  • Cats’ Influence: Increasing the role of cats in gameplay, adding resource generation counters and deeper stats for players to track.
